STAGE 5 – assembly: body armour – back

:: March 29th 2016 ::

Time to assemble the largest parts of the amour now – the body sections.  I won’t be using the supplied Anovos strapping system, instead opting for the now infamous ‘screen accurate’ Mr No stripes bracket kit courtesy of the FISD forum.

The bracket kit comprises of nuts, bolts, screen accurate metal wire brackets and ready cut and sewn elasticated straps or hoops. It just looked a little stronger and more substantial than the supplied strapping system that came with the kit, and is highly recommended by the legend that is UKSWRATH on the FISD forum and the 501st guys.

Now, something that anyone following this route of strapping should be aware of – sections of the body armour are quite thin, in particular the return sections of the kidney plate and the butt plate. I didn’t realise just how thin until I started drilling. During this build element I had to resort to creating ‘reinforcement’ plates from the scrap as you’ll see. If you are using these brackets, I strongly suggest you do the reinforcement plates as a matter of course… you will need them.

You’ll notice that I have not applied any threadlock yet – that will be done once everything is in place and after a final fitting.

Also no reinforcement plates used on the top armour part. This section seems ok but I may add some plates before final completion.. it was the next sections that needed reinforcement.

The screw heads will need to be touched up with white enamel paint and as mentioned earlier a dab of threadlock on all the bolts  will be applied at final fitting.

That’s it for this stage.. the front armour is the next update to follow.
